about
Moskowitz Bayse is pleased to present new paintings and drawings by Los Angeles-based artist Aaron Elvis Jupin in its debut presentation at Art Athina, on view at Booth I14 from September 16 - 19, 2022. This presentation is the first solo outing for the artist in Europe.
Finding latent flashes of ersatz magic in the American psyche, Aaron Elvis Jupin’s recent body of work sees the artist continuing to explore notions of coincidence and nostalgia, locating artworks somewhere between question and answer. In four paintings and eight drawings–all created for the occassion, the artist frames his bizarro-world version of 1970’s suburban Americana–forming a moth-chewed memory blanket made up of moments that may or may not have happened. Like the last true childhood Halloween... monsters aren’t real. Are they?!
The artist’s work retools the familiar into something altogether new, just as how innocently last season’s earnest fright becomes this fall’s goof. But, of course, new fears supersede the old, honing the dulled edges of adolescence into the crueler prospect of the desensitization and jadedness of adulthood. Actuated by absurd humor, Jupin’s work skewers our fears and wonders aloud at what is really hiding under the bed.
