Opening Reception: November 7, 6 - 8 PM
Moskowitz Bayse is pleased to announce Pendulum, an exhibition of new paintings by Alexa Guariglia. Pendulum marks the artist’s third solo presentation with the gallery.
Alexa Guariglia intuitively investigates the elemental workings of human ethos in compositions that struggle between the profoundly humorous, intimately psychological, and stunningly cataclysmic. Her paintings, tireless in nature, couple punctilious brushwork with intense color relationships; both of which, stylistically and conceptually, are urgently present and uniquely her own.
Painting with ink and gouache on rich cotton papers, Guariglia employs both additive and subtractive techniques in her process. The paper allows for the different methods of erasure integral to her work, including the wiping of pigment, the sanding and cutting of surface, and the collage of her own imagery.
The works in Pendulum distinctly draw from the artist’s sincere engagement in contemporary life. Keenly aware and sensitive to the ebb and flow of chaos in her urban environment, she presents figures that fluidly appear and disappear amid complex abstraction. Each work distinctly lies between the frenzied ferocity and meditative tranquility of everyday life, scrutinizing and questioning the relationship between the individual and its constructed aura.
Alexa Guariglia (b. 1990) lives and works in Boston. She received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2012.
